Ballplayers are almost formulaic in response to records or streaks. If they’re nearing a nice, round number, all players are suddenly taking things “one game at a time” or “not paying attention” to their statistics.
“It’d be nice to get to 100,” Tucker said. “I haven’t gotten to that yet in my career but I think it’s a milestone number. I’d rather have 100 than 96 or 99 or whatever. The way guys have been getting on base in front of me, they’ve been doing a phenomenal job, so it makes it easier.”Nineteen regular-season games remain for Tucker to drive in four more runs. Barring an injury or a brutal stretch, he will notch the first 100-RBI season of his major league career.
Asking Tucker to steal eight more bases in 19 games is perhaps a lofty goal. Three more steals, three more homers and four RBIs would still put him alongside a Hall of Famer in some elite company. Bagwell is the only Astro to ever finish a season with at least 30 home runs, 25 stolen bases and 100 RBIs. He did it in 1996, 1997 and 1999.
Tucker is on track to post this type of season after one of his notoriously slow starts. He is a streaky hitter by nature and this season epitomizes it. He started the year 4-for-46 and didn’t get his OPS over .800 until May 12. He finished both April and July with a sub-.700 OPS. He had one over .920 in both June and August.
