Pitchers stand on the field during Astros workouts at Ballpark of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Florida in 2021.A pair of projectable Dominican-born prospects headlined the Astros’ nine-man international signing class announced on Sunday, the opening of baseball’s international signing period.

Shortstop Camilo Díaz and outfielder Esmil Valencia are considered the most touted players in the class. MLB.com ranked Díaz as the 17th best international prospect available in this signing period. Valencia came in at No. 21. Baseball America pegged Díaz No. 19 and Valencia No. 30 in its rankings. Multiple reports said Díaz signed for a $2.25 million bonus while Valencia received $1.1 million. Houston has a $5,284,000 international bonus pool.“Camilo Díaz is a toolsy and dynamic shortstop with a plus arm and the athleticism to stay in the middle of the diamond, “ Astros assistant director of international scouting Raymon Sanchez said in a statement.

Added Dominican scouting supervisor Alfredo Ulloa: “Esmil Valencia is a medium-framed outfielder who does it all on the baseball field. An above-average and explosive athlete, Esmil projects as a top-of-the-lineup hitter who can hit for average, power, and steal bases. An above-average defender, Esmil plays center field and shows a 70-grade arm on the 20-80 scouting scale. We are excited to add what we feel is one of the better international talents to our organization.
