The Astros did not disclose the specificity of his injury.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Astros utilityman Taylor Jones is dealing with a back injury and will miss the start of Class AAA Sugar Land’s season, manager Dusty Baker said on Friday.

Jones flew back to Houston earlier this week for further testing. Baker did not disclose the specificity of Jones’ injury, but said it will take him out of action “for a while.” Jones is expected to stay in West Palm Beach past spring training to work with team trainers and rehab specialists. “It just came up kind of out of nowhere,” Baker said. “We’re trying to figure out where it came from and how he hurt it. We’re hoping that works.”Signing Niko Goodrum in March left Jones a longshot to make the Astros’ opening day roster, but he represented valuable minor league depth at both corner infield spots. He is the team’s only true backup to first baseman Yuli Gurriel.

Jones appeared in 35 major league games last season and took 108 plate appearances, posting a .670 OPS.
