The talented young athlete has been remembered as 'a great talent' who 'was so highly thought of by her coaches'
Heartbreaking tributes have been paid to a 'funny, smart and kind' young athlete from Co Carlow who tragically passed away earlier this week. Indie Mai Byrne passed away on Monday, March 3, at her home in Carlow town.
A notice shared on RIP.ie remembered her as the "beloved and adored daughter of Caroline, cherished little sister of Ellie and Lia, much loved granddaughter of Mickey Joe, Geraldine and Damian and her best friend Paul". She will be sadly missed by her heartbroken mother, sisters, grandparents, great grandmother Mary Dooley, aunts Sarah and Eadaoin, uncles Mikey and Mark, cousins, extended family, relatives and her circle of friends and classmates. Indie was a talented athlete who represented St Laurence O'Toole AC at the Leinster Juvenile Championships last weekend, where she ran in the U13 and U14 girls relay final. The Askea-based athletics club shared an emotional tribute to their talented young club member in a post shared on their Facebook page. "It is with profound sadness that St. Laurence O’Toole A.C. learned of the devastating news of the passing of our juvenile athlete Indie Mai Byrne, who has left us far too soon," the club said. "Indie Mai was a much beloved member of the club, a truly beautiful girl with a beaming smile, who showed great talent, kindness and was so highly thought of by her coaches and her many friends here in the club, whom today are left with heavy hearts. "On behalf of everyone here in the club we would like to offer our heartfelt condolences to her mother Caroline, sisters Ellie and Lia, extended family and wide circle of friends, you are all in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.As a mark of respect to Indie Mae, St. Laurence O’Toole AC cancelled juvenile training on Tuesday in the wake of 'a tragedy which has touched our club and our members'. The club's heartbreaking tribute was met with an outpouring of support, with Athletics Ireland offering their condolences to club and staff members, as well as Indie Mai's family. "Our heartfelt condolences to the Byrne family and everyone in St Laurence O'Toole AC . Our thoughts are with you all," they said, while Carlow County Athletics added: "Our thoughts and prayers are with all Indie Mai's friends and family and everyone at St Laurence O'Toole AC." Indie Mai's tragic death has sent shockwaves through the local community, with friends and neighbours of the Byrne family paying tribute to the talented young sports star, who attended Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal primary school in Carlow. "Caroline, no words are adequate. Indie was a beautiful child, I knew her through St Catherine's and Community Games. Zoe was very fond of her, they played soccer in school mhuire and attended after schools together in St Catherine's for many years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. May beautiful Indie Mae rest in peace," said one mourner. "I will miss you so much indie you are the kindest girl ever. I loved doing all the running competitions with you and just having the best time with you at summer camp when we met molly scott, may you rest in peace. I love you so much," a close pal of Indie Mai's said. "So sorry Caroline, Lia, Ellie and all the Byrne family to hear about Indie Mai. A beautiful little girl who we remember fondly running around when we all played Tag Rugby. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time," another added. While a fourth person said: "Words do not express how deeply sorry I am for your loss of beautiful Indie Mai. I’ll forever remember Indie as a funny, smart, kind, bubbly and happy little girl. May she rest in peace and watch over you as you navigate through this extremely difficult time". Indie Mai's funeral mass will be held on Saturday morning at The Cathedral of the Assumption in Carlow, with burial afterwards in St Mary’s Cemetery. Her family have said that donations, if desired, can be made to Niamh Fitzpatrick Ballet Academy based in Carlow.
