A three-week celebration of Mexican culture honoring the tradition of the Day of the Dead began Saturday as Aurora’s downtown was transformed into Sugar Skull City.

Now in its third year, Sugar Skull City includes downtown stores decorated with colorful displays as well as a variety of activities designed to create a rich cultural experience.Events planned through Nov. 6 include a festival on Water Street Mall Nov. 4 put together by Athziry Dia de los Muertos, a nonprofit run by Jose Torres. The event will include a fashion show hosted by the local Mexican restaurant La Quinta de los Reyes and a number of activities at the Santori Public Library downtown.
La Central Bakery at 110 E. Galena Blvd. in downtown Aurora is one of more than 40 businesses participating in this year's Sugar Skull City celebration. “We had about 40 businesses participate in last year’s Sugar Skull City and this year I think there are a few more,” Torres said Saturday. “People are very excited and so many businesses they want to participate in this in every way and they are going to bring this way of life to downtown Aurora.”
Jennifer Vasquez, who said she “was born and raised in Aurora,” spoke about the whole Sugar Skull City experience saying, “I love all of it.”
