Austin author Elizabeth McCracken mixes memoir and fiction in 'The Hero of This Book.'
was struggling with a short story that she couldn’t quite get to work in 2019 when a friend mentioned working on a small, semiautobiographical novel.So she started a similar project.
Eventually, the annotations fell away, and she ended up with “The Hero of This Book.” In the slim charmer, a writer visiting London spends her days taking long walks and thinking about her mother, who died in 2018. “One of the reason why it’s a novel and not a memoir is I feel like for it to be an honest memoir, there’s stuff I would have wanted to put in that I know my mother would have hated, that she would have absolutely objected to,” she said.
