AUSTIN, Texas — Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in a letter last week told Austin ISD that its Pride Week events were violating state law, but that didn’t stop the district from holding a large Pride event over the weekend.Austin ISD on Saturday held a “PRIDE OUT! The event came after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sent a letter to the district claiming its Pride Week events violated state law Paxton claimed that Pride Week events constitute the teaching of sex education and lessons on “sensitive gender-and-sexuality issues” Austin ISD Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Elizalde responded to Paxton in a tweet, writing, “I want all our LGBTQIA+ students to know that we are proud of them and that we will protect them against political attacks”
