When the parents finished, four of them lifted the altar and carried it down 11th Street to the Governor’s Mansion in the next block, placing it outside a gate a few yards from the front door. Gov. Greg Abbott said in September that raising the minimum age to buy a rifle was unconstitutional, a stance legal experts dispute.
Mariachi Paredes, a group from the University of Texas at Austin, serenaded the gathering as participants placed the marigolds they had carried from the Capitol back onto the altar. The parents reassembled close by, holding signs bearing the faces of their children.“As a Latina, I think it is important that we are supporting one another in our communities and that we are able to hold each other and to collectively mourn such horrible tragedies like these,” said Daniela Silva, an Austin resident.
