With Ireland facing a freeze, experts advise against walking on lawns to prevent damage to grass blades.

As parts of Ireland experience temperatures as low as -8 degrees this week, people are being warned to avoid walking on their lawns to protect their grass from lasting damage. Experts are advising people to stay off their lawns as snow and frosty conditions grip areas. These low temperatures mean grass blades begin to freeze, which isn’t good news for the future health of your lawn – as Luke Dejahang, a gardening expert at Crown Pavilions pointed out.

Avoid walking over frozen grass where at all possible in freezing winter weather,” he said. “When grass is frozen, the water inside its cells has turned to ice. This makes the grass blades brittle and prone to breaking under pressure, such as walking across the grass. Broken blades of grass lose their protective outer layer, leaving them vulnerable to further damage and disease.” he explained. Whilst walking on frozen grass is unlikely to ruin it forever, it can still cause significant damage that may take time and effort to repair. Luke explained that the extent of the damage depends on factors like “grass species, the severity of the cold, and how often and heavily the grass is walked on”. If your lawn or any area of grass is heavily walked on during a frosty period, you will be able to tell when the frost clears and the weather begins to get warmer. Heavily walked-on grass could leave lawns with uneven, discoloured, muddy patches that look unsightly.
