By Wednesday afternoon, he agreed to ease the additional safety inspections at the bridge near Laredo after Mexican officials promised more security along an 8-mile stretch of the border.
But it’s an election year and Operation Lone Star is essentially the governor’s re-election strategy. He is touting these measures in fundraising emails to potential donors. Never mind that he’s holding hostage consumer goods ranging from medical instruments to produce. Groups such as the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas say 80 percent of perishable fruits and vegetables will be lost, potentially costing millions and directly affecting what’s on our plates.
