When parade-goers yell out the popular street refrain, “Show me your shoes!” they largely oblige, raising the hems of their gowns to reveal whimsical footwear ranging from fuzzy slippers to cowboy boots.
“For 90 years, young society women in San Antonio, Texas, have donned custom-designed dresses and trains to take part in the coronation of a queen and her court,” her book jacket said. “The coronation is part of the 10-day, century-old festival celebrating the final battle of the 1836 Texas revolt against Mexico.”
Her scholarship helped examine the groups spurred by a simple event in which ladies in carriages threw flowers at the Alamo to honor the “heroes” of Texas Independence.
