Ayala: Starr County becomes test site for SB8, court’s reversal of Roe vs. Wade
Abortion rights supporters gather to protest Texas SB 8 in front of Edinburg City Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021, in Edinburg, Texas. The nation's most far-reaching curb on abortions since they were legalized a half-century ago took effect Wednesday in Texas, with the Supreme Court silent on an emergency appeal to put the law on hold.Little Starr County in the Rio Grande Valley has made news over the years.
Senate Bill 8 was signed into law in 2021 and effectively made abortion illegal in Texas after six weeks of pregnancy, when most women are unlikely to know they’re pregnant. Men, major drivers of anti-abortion legislation, remain the most unaffected by abortion laws, by their physical and emotional consequences and by unwanted pregnancy and the aftermath of a birth.
SB8 calls for civil penalties, not criminal charges such as murder, but last week Starr County charged, arrested and indicted a 26-year-old woman for causing “the death of an individual by self-induced abortion” in January.
