Seven years after it was refurbished, Ayr's Newton Tower is set for its latest repair work.

From Monday, August 12, the cement - which South Ayrshire Council say is in “poor condition” - will be replaced by a new lime-based render.

Dating back to 1795, Newton Tower is a category B listed building and was most-recently refurbished by the council in 2017. Both lanes closest to the tower will be closed, reducing King Street to a single lane westbound towards Main Street and eastbound towards the roundabout. On Main Street, the centre lane will be closed outside Aldi, reducing northbound traffic to a single lane. Traffic continuing on Main Street and turning right will use the same lane.

Councillor Martin Kilbride, buildings, housing and environment portfolio holder for South Ayrshire Council, said: “I am delighted these works are taking place. The use of the new lime-based render is much more in keeping with the original construction methods and is better for the stonework.
