San Diego State defensive coordinator wants to see tackling, tenacity continue to improve on veteran unit

San Diego State defensive coordinator Kurt Mattix said he has the utmost respect for Utah offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig.

“Caden McDonald, for example, was recruited by Utah, and they went in another direction. We’re happy to have him, but for him, it’s personal.”SDSU’s 3-3-5 defense was in its infancy when Ludwig was on The Mesa, so he likely didn’t get a sense for it one would now. “If they sat there and thought, ‘What games did we not play our best in?’ They’d probably circle that.”

While there are returning starters at seven positions — and a pair of Division I transfers at two others — the defense has not resembled itself the first two games of the season. Senior safety Patrick McMorris noted the defensive improvement the Aztecs made from Week 1 to Week 2.
