San Diego State QB Jalen Mayden passes for three touchdowns in 43-27 win over San Jose State; Aztecs bowl-eligible for school-record 13th straight season
On game days, the San Diego State football team is afforded a police escort for the arduous 5-mile drive from campus to Snapdragon Stadium.
SDSU quarterback Jalen Mayden threw three touchdown passes for the first time in his career. He moved the chains with his legs as well, carrying 13 times for a game-high 61 of the team’s 157 rushing yards. Jaylon Armstead’s 3-yard touchdown run with 3:15 remaining in the third quarter expanded the lead to 38-14, matching SDSU’s highest scoring total of the season. A 31-yard Jack Browning field goal with 6:55 remaining made it a season-high 41.It was a reminder that this was supposed to be a defensive game. So much for that.
SDSU’s offense finally showed signs of life when, after the punt team came onto the field on fourth-and-5 at the 37, the Aztecs changed gears and sent the offense back out. The next time they got the ball, the Aztecs got the lead. The offense did it with its biggest play of the season, when Mayden floated a pass over the defense and into the hands of Shavers , who raced 66 yards for a touchdown that provided SDSU with a 17-14 advantage.
This much: Six of the 10 teams the Aztecs have played this season used starting quarterbacks who did not begin their careers with their current schools.Of course, both QBs who have started for SDSU this season — Mayden and Burmeister — also transferred in from elsewhere.The Bulldogs, who hold a tiebreaker edge over both SDSU and San Jose State, can clinch a share of the West title and a berth in the Mountain West championship game, with a win Saturday at Nevada.
