San Diego State faces Falcons option offense that leads the nation in rushing; Air Force also among nation's leaders in scoring defense, total defense
Not when you lead the nation in rushing.Air Force is averaging 336.4 rushing yards a game after totaling 359 yards in last week’s 24-12 win over the Rams.The Falcons have a different streak against San Diego State. They have lost nine in a row against the Aztecs — including last year’s 20-14 home loss — and now cling to a 19-18 lead in the all-time series.SDSU is a 1 1/2-point underdog against Air Force for a game that kicks off Saturday night at 6 at Snapdragon Stadium.
It is the second time in four seasons Air Force has swept its in-state rivals, though it will take several more meetings for the series to become a big deal.If those are the bright spots on the season, certainly the downside is a disappointing finish in the Mountain West. Two weeks after that came a loss at Utah State and Air Force’s hopes of winning the Mountain Division were all but over.Air Force has won three straight games since then — against Army, New Mexico and Colorado State — and the Falcons still have a chance for their second straight 10-win season.Air Force’s triple option presents a challenge for opponents who typically have limited time to prepare for an offense that is both unusual and run with precision.
A byproduct of all the running is that Air Force leads the country in time of possession, controlling the ball for 36 of the game’s 60 minutes.Roberts gained a career-high 184 yards against Colorado State. He is 70 yards away from breaking the school’s single-season rushing record set in 1996 by Beau Morgan .
Air Force uses the pass primarily as a surprise. Daniels has completed 35 of 74 throws for 719 yards and six touchdowns with two interceptions.Air Force ranks sixth in the nation in scoring defense and third in total defense .
