Storm Oscar will hit some of the Canary Islands from Tuesday
Irish holidaymakers enjoying a sunny trip to the Canary Islands are set be hit with a storm bringing with it the possibility of large waves and flooding, the Met Office has said.
Storm Oscar is set to hit the Canary Islands, off the northwest coast of Africa, which is comprised of eight main islands, including the hugely popular and largest island Tenerife, as well as Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, popular with Irish tourists. AEMET, the Spanish meteorological service, named the storm, which is set to arrive to the islands this coming week. The Met Office UK, who have weather stations based in the Canary Islands said: "Heavy rain and brisk winds are forecast across the Canary Islands this week, leading to the risk of large waves and localised flooding."
It is understood the storm will bring intense rain and wind, particularly in the western islands, such as La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, El Hierro and La Gomera. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote will be less affected from the rain, which starts on Tuesday morning.Met Éireann has also indicated that Storm Oscar could impact Ireland after it has passed over the Canaries, brining the possibility of rain, however the warm temperatures are expected to remain.
