David DiPietro holds the offer from Chase with a $750 signing bonus for accounts open six months. He thinks he deserves the bonus, even though he shut the account early because it had been frozen twice. That’s how small business owner David DiPietro sees his recent experience of opening a new checking account at Chase.
Everything seemed to go fine, except he was surprised to learn he couldn’t make mobile deposits of checks from a client in Canada. A month later, on Oct. 12, DiPietro received another letter from Chase, warning he had to “act now” to keep the account open. “I asked about closing the account and was told I could not do anything until this was cleared up – basically holding my money hostage and essentially shutting down my business,” he said.
“So now I am out the $750 bonus that tempted me to open the account, as well as at least 12 hours spent in phone calls, trips to the bank, waiting at the branch while employees tried to call their totally ridiculous `back office,’ time spent rerouting bill pays – not to mention lost sleep in going through this in my mind over and over again,” DiPietro said.It makes sense that companies have conditions when they pay sign-on bonuses and other perks that are used to attract new business.
