The bank has reported a huge increase in the number of purchase scams which sees customers hand over their bank details to fraudsters who lie about selling goods and services

Bank of Ireland has issued a warning to customers after a series of purchase scams tricked members of the public into paying for fake goods and services through online adverts. The scams sell a wide range of differently priced items including clothes, trainers, holiday home deposits and even cars. Fraudsters lure shoppers in with bargain prices and ask them to pay directly by sending money from their bank account to another via bank transfer.

Nicola Sadlier, Head of Fraud at Bank of Ireland, advised: "Fraudulent advertisements online and on social media have been the subject of regular warnings for some time. "It’s unacceptable to see fraudsters operating so openly through online advertisements. No company should be generating advertising revenue from criminals – search engines, websites and social media platforms really need to step up and crackdown.
