This review explores the charming and luxurious experience at Barberstown Castle, a hidden gem near Maynooth, Kildare. From the welcoming atmosphere and spacious, modern rooms to the delicious food and impressive amenities, this castle hotel offers a unique blend of history and contemporary comfort.

Castles and stately homes are all the rage at the moment. You only have to look at hit TV shows The Traitors, Rivals and Bridgerton to see the obsession with stepping back into that “old world” and feeling like you’ve entered a completely different time period. Barberstown Castle, near Maynooth, in Co. Kildare was that perfect spot for me. I think the term “hidden gem” gets bandied around an awful lot these days and it’s used to describe anything that’s not totally identifiable as mainstream.

However, Barberstown is exactly that – it’s a perfect hidden gem. When you go away for a night you don’t want to be in the car travelling all day and this hotel was an ideal 40-minute drive from my home in Dublin. When I checked in, I was immediately wowed by the homely atmosphere, which is hard to get right in a castle-style hotel. My room, which looked over the impressive garden, was completely modern and full of the mod cons that you come to expect in an exclusive resort. A huge bath, walk-in shower, large dressing area and a massive bed met me when I turned the key and cast aside my bags. The best part was the hidden TV though, the incredible flat screen rose up from the bottom of the bed, something I had never seen before in a hotel. Binge watching Gossip Girl never felt as boujee. The room easily surpassed my expectations and the food offerings didn’t disappoint either. As a self-confessed chicken wing connoisseur, they were my number one pick from the bar menu alongside some tasty chips and a Diet Coke on ice. No meal in a hotel compares to breakfast though and the morning meal was second to none. There was a perfect mix of à la carte offerings and breakfast buffet, so it was the best of both world
