The day Barbie fever saw 30 houses on Greater Manchester street painted PINK
With the release of the first full-length Barbie movie today, cinema staff will be bracing themselves as Barbie fever hits Britain.
Hinting at a movie with more to it than its bubble gum visuals first signs are promising, with the film scoring 89% on movie review website Rotten Tomatoes. But this isn't the first time fever for the all American doll has gripped Greater Manchester.25-years ago, residents woke up to an entire street painted pink in honour of the fashion doll.
For two-weeks, the shocking hue of the bricks and mortar became a magnet for the curious and Barbie fanatics across the country and beyond. The newspaper reported residents were told they could keep their street pink following the celebrations, or have it returned to its normal colour. The carpet, 100 yards long and 22 yards wide, and worth more than £3,000 was hurriedly dyed and laid out just in time for the event. Following the end of the publicity stunt, the decision was made to restore the terraces to their original red brick.
