Barbie director Greta Gerwig opened up about how she felt when the set photos of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling leaked. 'And then we realized, in that moment, we were like, 'Oh! We look insane!' But we didn't know.'
Barbie director Greta Gerwig shares her reaction to when the first images from the upcoming movie leaked online. Based on Mattel's eponymous fashion doll line, a Barbie movie has been in development for nearly 15 years, with Anne Hathaway and Amy Schumer attached to play the title role at different points in time. However, after cycling through a number of directors and writers, Warner Bros. took over the rights for Barbie in 2019, enlisting Margot Robbie to play the lead character.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Now, while talking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Gerwig recalled her reaction to when the first Barbie set photos showing Gosling and Robbie by the beach leaked. Since the movie was being filmed on closed sets up to that point, Gerwig did not realize how eccentric Robbie and Gosling's characters looked in Barbie.
"But, no, that picture was, we'd shot most of the movie in London and then we went to L.A. to shoot, and everything for us was so - The cast was so committed. Everyone gave everything they had. They really went for it. It's like full, full commitment. And then we realized, in that moment, we were like, 'Oh! We look insane!' But we didn't know.
While audiences already have an idea that the film will be a campy, flamboyant showcase of dazzling costumes, the Barbie cast members have also hyped the unexpected tone of the movie. While there is not much that is known about Barbie's unexpected storytelling, rumors from when the movie was in pre-production suggest that the film is a bitingly satirical feminist comedy with an overarching theme about embracing one's imperfections and flaws.
Gerwig's reaction seconds that of Robbie, who earlier mentioned that filming Barbie was a "mad" experience. That experience likely mirrors the fervor around the film - it didn't take long before the set photos and videos were spoofed and transformed into viral memes that continue to circulate across the internet.
