Bassetlaw District Council faces challenges in providing housing for rough sleepers due to their violent behavior, forcing them to find alternative solutions.

Bassetlaw District Council is facing a difficult situation attempting to house rough sleepers in Worksop . While the Labour-run authority works with various providers to offer temporary accommodation, a significant challenge arises from individuals who engage in violent behavior, substance abuse, or endanger guests and staff, leading to their removal from these premises. This often results in them returning to the streets, exacerbating the issue of homelessness in the town center.

During a meeting of Bassetlaw District Council’s Overview & Scrutiny Committee on January 30, concerns were raised about the increasing number of rough sleepers in Worksop. Nikala Elliot, Community Safety & Safeguarding Manager at the council, acknowledged that rough sleeping has long been a problem in Bassetlaw, but the current situation presents a significant obstacle. She highlighted the difficulty in finding suitable housing for individuals with a history of violence, stating that the council faces a 'brick wall' in these cases. Elliot explained that while the council identifies and attempts to engage with rough sleepers, offering them help and support, many refuse to accept assistance. Those who do engage often end up being removed from temporary accommodations due to their violent behavior. She emphasized the council's responsibility to prioritize the safety of both staff and paying residents, making it impossible to house individuals who pose a risk. Stephen Brown, head of corporate services at Bassetlaw District Council, added that the council continues to offer support to the homeless population, but some individuals refuse help, preferring to remain on the streets despite being offered accommodation. He highlighted the need for a national solution to address this complex issue
