Channel 5's My Wife, My Abuser exposes chilling 20-year abuse of man by his wife. The new documentary, set to air on Monday, 18th March, tells the story of Richard Spencer, who was subjected to years of abuse from his wife Sheree Spencer.
WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT. My Wife, My Abuser: The Secret Footage will air tonight on Channel 5 at 10pmA husband who was beaten by his wife for two decades has found new love after his wife tormented him for years was put behind bars for her incessant campaign of cruelty.
Explosive clips from police interviews shared by police, show Spencer casually lying about her husband being the abuser in a desperate bid to cast him as the villain - only for her face to turn ashen when she was confronted with the full audio footage. On another occasion she defecated on the floor and forced him to clean it up while on a third she beat him with a wine bottle so hard it permanently disfigured his ear.
Officers said Spencer went into autopilot as she explained the scenario - she was saying 'I was saying I wanted to die and I was giving Richard the knife and saying you're going to have to kill me because I can't live like this any more'. But Mr Spencer felt his harrowing experiences should be seen to raise awareness of the type of abuse men can suffer in their daily lives at the hands of violent partners but Sheree tried to block it.
The husband said there were two cameras set up - one in the playroom and one in the bedroom, explaining 'they were there for reassurance, to keep an eye out because it's a big house'. 'She was bragging about her high flying career while subjecting her poor husband, a lovely man, to daily abuse, degradation and humiliation.'
The hidden nanny cam gave a vital way out for battered husband Mr Spencer after he endured years of physical and verbal abuse from his wife, that sometimes left him 'broken' in a foetal position But he said the mental scars left by 16 years of her hate-filled attacks were what would leave the most lasting effect.
'It’s astonishing to me that she’s living a relatively easy life in prison, having been moved to an open jail after six months of her sentence.
