The Voice calculates black local programmes get 0.001% of the licence fee, and proportionally 10,000 times less than Gaelic radio service per head of population.THE BBC were accused of secrecy after refusing to reveal how much cash goes into black local radio shows, while at the same time boasting about spending £25 million on orchestras.about the level of resources that goes to local African and Caribbean programmes, claiming such information was “commercially sensitive.
calculates the BBC spends up to £50,000 annually on all the presenters and part time producers across all ten programmes, serving four million black Brits. That works out at 0.001% share of the £3.8 billion licence fee income. “So it’s disappointing that it’s not using the same level of transparency for ethnic diversity as it does for regional diversity. It will be very hard for it to be publicly accountable for its proposed changes unless it has this transparency.”He added: “If we don’t have the yardstick of knowing how much resource is going into the African and Caribbean programmes we will not know how much the resource will be after the changes. This is fundamental public accountability.
However, sources understand corporation bosses are gravitating towards further merging of counties, making the shows less local, and more emphasis on BBC Sounds content. A decision is expected in early January. In addition, there are two Asian presenters tasked with reflecting some black stories in their shows which also cover other communities – Waheed Akhtar ; and Manny Masih . Both their shows are four hours each, but critics say black people in Leeds and Sheffield don’t know at which point during the show to tune in to get black stories and voices. Adebayo’s show is badged as catering for “London’s diverse communities.
