Miriam Margolyes was being interviewed by Kirsty Wark for Radio 4 show Front Row, when the offending comment was made about a fictional Charles Dickens character, which lead to backlash for the BBC
BBC bosses have been forced to remove Miriam Margolyes' shocking three-word comment from a Radio 4 show, after she referred to a Charles Dickens character as "Jewish and vile".
Delving into her love of author Charles Dickens, Kirsty asked Miriam who was the "first character who stuck in your head as a child?" Miriam responded: "Oh, Fagin. Without question. Jewish and vile. I didn’t know Jews like that then – sadly, I do now." Although the audience laughed, the BBC removed the comments from the episode.
She explained: "It made me feel terrified and every part of pride that I had inside myself quickly faded." A visibly moved Miriam proceeded to wrap her arms around Abbie for an embrace, consoling her: "That's awful, I can't bear that."
