The beautiful coastal town which some say is a 'nightmare' when the sun comes out
Its gorgeous beach, stunning pine tree forest and gorgeous nature reserve are right on Lancashire’s doorstep - but some residents say it’s a ‘nightmare’ when the sun comes out.
On a baking hot summer’s day, the staff at M&Co on Chapel Lane are cheerful and positive. Sheila Leathley, who has worked there for ten years, says: “Our shop here in Formby does solely ladies and we do have a loyal range of customers. They tell us all those stories; what's going on in their lives and we feel as if you've got to know them as friends as well as customers.
“But you would not want people not to be allowed to come here and it gives it a young atmosphere. I think it's got busier and there is an increase of people coming in. Traffic cones sit on double yellow lines on Victoria Road leading up to the National Trust entrance, while what appears to be an unobtrusive CCTV camera high above the pavement also peers down. But such measures, while welcome, are simply not enough, say locals, who list a seemingly incessant array of unpleasant grievances, such as being trapped in their own homes due to parked cars when the sun comes out.
Another local, who again, wanted to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, told us: “We have eight thousand cars coming here. It’s a nightmare for the residents, when you can’t move in and out because people are double parked, and cars are flooding in. They’ve left dirty nappies, bags full of faeces, used sanitary products; all these have been found.”
“It gets really busy and they park on both sides of the road. People feel a bit intimidated, but you know what, it’s just a few weekends when the weather is hot. At the end of the day live with it - it’s a case of live and let live. People have every right to go anywhere they like.” “And of course, with thousands of visitors, you do get littering and anti-social behaviour… I don’t think the National Trust really manages the security and the handling of the coastline that well since they bought it from Sefton Council; I don’t think they can handle it.
Similarly, stunning Bradford girls Nabeela, 20, and Adeela, 21, dressed in beautiful, long, white dresses and bearing a luxurious picnic hamper, told Lancs Live they had come to enjoy some food on the beach. Nabeela said: “We had a picnic and some donuts, which was lovely. It’s a lovely little town and we enjoy the views on the beach. We like Formby because people keep themselves to themselves, whereas if you go to Blackpool, it’s not like that.
They added that the trust met fortnightly with Sefton Council, Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue, RNLI, The Coastguard, Natural England and Merseyrail to share information, learnings, ideas and plan ahead and raised awareness of what to expect on a busy day on social media and the trust's website, highlighting limited parking, where they also shared information on simple ways everyone can help care for and protect Formby and on the trust's conservation work and wildlife in...
