Google trend data has analysed where the worst affected places are
The rise in searches comes amid the crisis in Paris, in France, which has been overrun with the pests and now people in the UK have been frantically searching 'how to get rid of bedbugs'.- Birmingham Live reports.
Google trend data shows London has the highest rate of people searching for updates on the bugs and how they can treat bitemarks, followed by Leicester, Manchester and Bristol in second, third and fourth.READ MORE:All the new Bank Holidays to be added to 2024 calendar Birmingham, Liverpool, Newcastle and Glasgow also had extremely high rates of people making searches. Dr Richard Naylor, director at the Bed Bug Foundation, said a search for alternative methods to control bedbugs was underway as "there's a real problem with insecticide resistance".
However, he added that there was "very little evidence of them transmitting disease". "It's been shown theoretically in some lab studies that there's a few things that they can transmit, but it almost never happens. The key thing with bedbugs is the mental health impacts which can be really severe. As people who get bedbugs tend to have a lot of shame about it."
Dr Naylor, who completed a PhD in bedbug ecology at the University of Sheffield, added that this can lead to people becoming "very isolated and sleep deprived".
