FILE — A cost-sharing program to help San Antonio residents with the price of insulin could operate like the city’s housing emergency housing assistance program has.City Councilwoman Adriana Rocha Garcia stops by her parents’ house every night to help her dad with his insulin. When he recently switched to a new kind, she had to jump through hoop after hoop to get him the right needles to receive the care he needs.
Insulin is a critical medication in treating and managing diabetes, but its cost has skyrocketed in recent years, nearly doubling from 2012 to 2016. Packages of varying sizes can run upThat makes it difficult for low-income families, or those with certain health insurance plans, to afford. Of Bexar County adults who reported they had diabetes, more than 27 percent earned less than $25,000, according to Metro Health. About 8 percent said they earned more than $50,000.
