The scheme offering jobs to young people aged 16-24 at risk of long-term unemployment has ended due to budget constraints
A charity in Belfast has hit out as a Stormont department has unexpectedly ended an employment scheme due to budget constraints.
The JobStart Scheme allowed employers to create new job opportunities to help young people aged 16-24 at risk of long-term unemployment to enter the workplace in a six-month long job opportunity. The JobStart 50+ Scheme remains for those aged 50-64 years old. She said: "I've spoken to staff in the Department for Communities office who are facilitating and managing this and they are devastated. They were expecting to be having to carry out the scheme until September.
She said: "We're a tiny independent charity that is doing way more than you would expect given our staffing and volunteers. We remodelled based on what these two roles would be doing, and the type of work we could take on based on having an additional 50 hours resource per week for six months. "It's a really great programme that gives young people experience to get out of that vicious cycle of not being able to get a job as they have no experience. Although the funding comes from a different place, they're now doing another programme which is for people who are 50+, which is again fantastic.
