SDLP Councillor Gary McKeown commended the delivery of the alley-gating programme phase five, but added that the local authority should take responsibility for livening up the alleyways they have made safe.
A Belfast Councillor has said the “never ending story” of the latest phase of alley gating is over and has made an appeal for City Hall to help communities with the new gates to “animate” their alleys.
“In many of these communities that already have gates, we have seen it act as a protective factor for activities within the entries. That works to the benefit of the community itself and indeed the council in terms of cleansing.” “With the protection of the gates in those areas it will give even more incentive than before. But I don’t think it is fair to leave it to those communities to do it on their own. I think there needs to be a proactive approach by the council to support them, because they are doing the right thing.
“All those streets that were not advertised in tranche one of phase five have been revisited. Residents were canvassed through a postal survey, and this was followed up with a door-to-door consultation.
