A father-of-two from Co Mayo will be laid to rest today following a fatal road crash last week. Michael John Murphy, in his 40s, was killed in a single-vehicle accident on the N59 at Ballycroy, near Westport, around 10am on Thursday (February 6). Mr. Murphy, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after. A native of Westport, Mr. Murphy worked as a delivery driver for DPD and resided in Belmullet with his partner, Madara Parfjonova, from Latvia. Mr.
Murphy was well-known and respected in the area, and tributes have poured in for the popular father-of-two. Many of Mr. Murphy's colleagues expressed their shock and sadness at his tragic death. 'Deepest condolences to Michael John's parents, children, partner, extended family and friends upon hearing of his tragic passing doing his job, we are all shocked and saddened here in the depot, may he rest in peace,' one person said. Another of Mr. Murphy's colleagues said: 'Lost for words. Sincere sympathy to MJ's family at this very difficult time. MJ was a true gentleman, always greeted you with a smile, a great man for chats and banter. A great work colleague. Rest in peace lad.' Mr. Murphy left a lasting impression on those who knew him, with mourners sharing stories of the popular delivery driver's kindness and humor in online messages. One person said: 'Deepest sympathies to Michael Johns parents John and Mary, his brother patrick, his partner Madara, his kids Rian and Sean and their mum siobhan and extended families, it is with a heavy heart that we write this post. 'Anyone who knows Michael Conroy Motors knows that it's its not just a business, it's a place where even customers and friends will call in for a cup of tea and the craic is a definite. Well Michael john was one of these visitors very regularly, and since he joined DPD it was every evening after work, he come in, smoking a fag, just having the laugh with our staff, and other friends and customers who was in. 'If you heard the car wash going for more than 30mins you knew it was MJ that was at it, same as everything is done it had be perfect. A gifted trades man, he done a lot of work around the garage for us, and always with the best ideas. 'The garage has never been as busy, and the last txt between myself and Michael john i was telling him we are under awful pressure. His reply was, don't be letting it get to you, it would be worse it the lads where looking at each other wondering what to do. 'It's safe to say there will be no electrical problems in heaven from now on. Until we meet again Mick.' Another person added: 'Sincere Condolences to Michael John’s family at this devastating time, Michael John loaded his van outside our bakery door, it was always a joy to walk around the corner every morning (very early) and be greeted with his humour, he was diligent, efficient and just sound. 'We had lots of chats and plenty of banter over the last few months and we will miss him greatly, my heart goes out to his family, friends and colleagues he will be greatly missed. RIP Michael John.' While a third said: 'I was devastated to hear of the tragic passing of Michael John. I have such fond memories of him which I will cherish forever. He was always so helpful and kind to me down through the years. Thinking of you all at this sad time. May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace.' Mr. Murphy will be laid to rest after requiem mass at St Mary’s Church in Westport on Monday. His death notice shared on RIP.ie reads: 'The death has occurred of Michael John Murphy, Belmullet and Upper Drummindoo, Westport, tragically. 'Deeply regretted by his loving family, sons Sean & Rian and their mother Siobhan, his parents John & Mary, brother Patrick, aunts Eileen Heraty & Nonie Flynn, Uncles Pat Murphy, Marty, Tom, Sean & Mick Hoban & his partner Madara, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends. Gardai closed off the N59 between Mulranny to Bangor Erris for several hours on Thursday as they investigated the fatal crash. And they are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. The force said in a statement: 'Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were in the area between 9.30am and 10am are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí. 'Anyone with any information is asked to contact Westport Garda Station on 098 50230, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
