A star of Netflix 's popular series Squid Game has passed away at the age of 81, three months after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. Lee Joo-Sil , known for her role as Park Mal Soon, the mother of Hwang Jun Ho (Wi Ha Joon) and stepmother of Hwang In Ho (Lee Byung Hun) in the second season of the show, died today at her family home in Uijeongbu, South Korea , according to The Chosun Ilbo newspaper.

Fans of Squid Game have been expressing their condolences on social media, remembering Lee Joo-Sil for her talent and her heartwarming portrayal of a grandmother figure in the series. Many shared their favorite memories of her acting and wished her peace. Lee Joo-Sil had previously battled breast cancer 30 years ago, being given only one month to live. After a 13-year fight, she was declared cancer-free. Sadly, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer during a routine checkup in November.A funeral service for the actress will be held at Shinchon Severance Hospital in South Korea on February 5th. Lee Joo-Sil started her acting career in 1964 and gained recognition for both her voice acting and on-screen performances. She is also known for her roles in the Korean TV series The Uncanny Counter and the South Korean horror film Train to Busan. Squid Game's second season, which premiered on December 26th, has already amassed over 126.2 million views, setting a record for the most views by a Netflix series in such a short period.
