So sad, RIP
Blackburn Empire Theatre confirmed the passing of Michael Berry this week, who they described as their 'Champion, Chairman and Friend'. Taking to their social media, the theatre confirmed that Michael had passed away peacefully on Sunday after battling an illness for the last few weeks.
Michael was one of the primary forces behind raising funds for the theatre to reopen to the people of Blackburn. It was a 20 year dream in the making and according to those behind-the-scenes, Michael's enthusiasm for the project "was addictive" and "everyone who was lucky enough to know him, knew the deep passion he had for our theatre."
"Never was he happier to see a large crowd in the audience for our Monday Afternoon Variety Shows, as he compèred the shows with his effervescent vigour, cheeky humour and singing skills. Our show, on Saturday night, just before we heard the tragic news, was sold out, with the audience and performers all having a great night; the theatre was buzzing with excitement and the atmosphere was electric.
