Next season will be Espada's sixth season as Houston's bench coach.
He's spanned two managers — Baker and A.J. Hinch — and become an integral piece of the Astros' continuity.
Espada, who coaches the team's infielders, mentored two consecutive Gold Glove shortstops in Carlos Correa and Jeremy Peña. He is responsible for scheduling every aspect of spring training and coordinates much of the day-to-day operations during the regular season. Espada interviewed with the Miami Marlins and Chicago White Sox this winter for their managerial openings. He did not get either job, continuing a flummoxing trend for one of baseball's hottest managerial candidates.
The Astros are still attempting to finalize their coaching staff in the wake of general manager James Click's departure. Pitching coach Bill Murphy and catching coach Michael Collins are still without guaranteed contracts next season, people familiar with the organization said.
