Now that barbeque season is upon us, we’ve enlisted the help of those in-the-know to recommend the best of the best, and the best on a budget
There are two types of people in this world. Those who take the art of barbequing as seriously as Michelen chefs and fair-weather BBQ’ers who only dabble in al fresco dining when the perfect conditions present themselves. . Patrick Hanlon and Russell Alford are Sunday Times Ireland restaurant critics and the food and travel writers behind GastroGays.com. The lads are renowned for their no nonsense approach when it comes to all things food, so who better to recommend the best budget barbeque.
You might also want to consider a ceramic ‘egg’ barbecue, which is similar to a kettle but the main difference being the egg shape , thick ceramic body and heavy lid. Naturally being heavier these are not as portable but they allow better heat retention and insulation resulting in more precise temperature control and longer, slow cooking and smoking. Keep an eye out in Lidl, in particular, as they often have these entry-level ceramic egg barbecues for €89.
"If you’re looking to invest in the ultimate barbeque it has to be the Home Fires braai by Fireboks. It’s available in solid fuel or gas, or a combo of the two. It can be installed indoors or outdoors or under a pergola. My personal favourite is the 1200mm freestanding solid fuel unit, which I installed in an enclosed area in the garden.
