Newsom's attempts to position himself as a leader of the Democratic Party have not gone unnoticed.

It's eye-catching moves such as these that have led to widespread speculation that Newsom —a well-liked, well-funded governor in the nation's most populous state — plans to seek the presidency in one of the next two election cycles. The biggest question for Newsom is whether Biden decides to run for re-election in 2024, as he's. If Biden does seek a second term, Newsom won't run. If he doesn't, the situation becomes less clear.
Conventional wisdom says Newsom won't run against Harris, a fellow California politician, if she makes a run for the presidency in 2024 or 2028. . In fact, Bakari Sellers, a Democrat close to Harris who served as a top surrogate for her in 2020, cautioned Newsom against doing so — evidence that a Newsom-Harris matchup in the future is inside the realm of possibility.
