Joe Biden is understood to be ready to give the green light to European countries to send fighter jets to Ukraine for the first time in what could prove a major breakthrough for the country’s war against Russia
Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, is leading talks with European leaders about sending enough jets to make a decisive difference in the conflict with Russia.
Mr Sunak has promised to contribute to the efforts, but the UK, which does not have F-16s of its own, will not send planes to Ukraine directly. Instead, it will fund the deliveries and may offer to “backfill” deployments by sending replacement jets to those countries which are part of the scheme. President Zelensky is flying to Hiroshima on Sunday where he will address the leaders of Britain, the US, Canada, Japan, France, Germany and Italy., who are on the fence about whether to back Ukraine.which can help Kyiv defend against the Kremlin’s troops. Mr Biden is understood to be poised to lift the US government’s ban on allies supplying the jets to Ukraine.
