To demonstrate this, Turner and colleague Edward Wasserman, a professor of psychology at the University of Iowa, trained pigeons to sort visual patterns into categories, and then compared the way they learned with how AI solved the same problem. The method the birds used is called associative learning, in which two phenomena are linked. A dog learning to associate the behavior of sitting on command with receiving a treat is a simple example of the same method.
By contrast, humans, naturally try to identify a rule for sorting that would make the task easier, and because this problem was designed without simple rules, people find it frustrating and tend to give up, said Turner.
