Actress Pauline Quirke, renowned for her role in the beloved sitcom Birds of a Feather, has announced her retirement from acting and all professional endeavors due to a dementia diagnosis received in 2021. Her husband, Paul Sheen, released a statement expressing his sadness and acknowledging Quirke's significant contributions to the film and television industry, her charitable work, and her successful academy, the Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts (PQA).
Actress Pauline Quirke, best known for her starring role in Birds of a Feather, is stepping back from her professional career after being diagnosed with dementia. Her husband, Paul Sheen, confirmed on January 21 that the 63 year old actress, who founded the Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts, had been diagnosed with the condition in 2021.
His emotional statement added: "Pauline has been an inspiration through her work in the film and TV industry, her charity endeavours and as the founder of the very successful Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts ." As the HSE points out, different types of dementia can affect people differently, and everyone will experience symptoms in their own way. Early signs can include: a slower thought process; problems with planning or organising; problems with understanding; problems concentrating; changes to your mood or behaviour and problems with memory and language - this is more common with Alzheimer's disease.
