If we are talking about supermassive black holes, these tend to lurk at the center of galaxies. In our local region of space, there could be 100 Billion supermassive black holes or thereabouts. Given the nature of these celestial phenomena, it's not actually possible to directly observe them with telescopes that rely on x-rays, light, or any other form of EM radiation.
