If you’ve ever agreed to terms and conditions without reading the fine print, then let the opening episode of Black Mirror series six be a warning 📺 emilyrbakes ★★★★
first started on Channel 4, audiences are eminently less shockable. Most of us are quietly comfortable about the fact that our Alexas are listening to us when we bitch about the companies we work for, argue with our families or sing along to our favourite songs, and that when we open Instagram it mysteriously seems to know that yesterday we were not even talking, but thinking, about buying a charcoal water filter.
Joan has, it turns out, signed away her rights in the small print when she took out a Streamberry subscription and has no control over how her image is used. It all becomes very meta, very quickly. The programme Joan watches about her life is broadly true, but exaggerated. She appears a little more disgusting and nasty than she really is and the other people in her life are caricatures.
When Joan ill-advisedly decides to sleep with Mac he struggles with the knowledge it will be on the show: “Everyone will laugh at me if I can’t get hard for Salma Hayek.” Murphy in particular excels with perfect comic timing and all the outrage of a woman coming undone. It’s eventually revealed that Streamberry is creating the ultimate “relatable” content by tapping into people’s innate masochism to create series about themselves from which they cannot look away.
