Blackpool's beautiful open air 'paradise' lost forever in 1980s demolition
The 1930s in the UK was a gold age for outdoor swimming pools with 169 built and maintained by local councils. Later in the 20th century, lidos started to close as foreign holidays became cheaper and the pools increasingly expensive to maintain.
Costing more than £750,000 to build - a huge amount of money back then - the oval shaped perimeter enclosed around a 376 foot long and 170 foot wide D shaped pool. The pool itself was filled with 1.6 million gallons of treated sea water. The surrounding building had space for 8,000 spectators and the pool room enough for 1,500 bathers. There were also coffee bars and three cafes for visitors to sit off and dine.
Now the largest indoor waterpark in the UK, the Sandcastle has gone on to become one of the resorts most popular destinations. However, over the years, Blackpool's tourist information centre's public Facebook page, Everything Blackpool, has posted photos of the old outdoor pool which has attracted many comments from those that remember it.
