Bloomfield Hospital under scrutiny: Reports reveal resident neglect and staff misconduct
Mental Health Commission, Bloomfield Hospital, Resident Neglect

The Mental Health Commission's inspections of Bloomfield Hospital uncovered serious failures in patient care and record-keeping. Staff were accused of mistreating residents, including leaving them soiled for hours and using physical force, while management delayed reporting these incidents. The hospital has since implemented changes and is under enhanced regulatory supervision.

The Mental Health Commission (MHC) has published two reports revealing significant issues at Bloomfield Hospital in Rathfarnham. The inspections, conducted in late 2025, found multiple critical risks including poor record-keeping, inadequate staffing, and flawed risk management.

Specifically, a healthcare assistant reported 12 incidents of resident mistreatment - such as leaving patients soiled for excessive periods, physical assaults, and verbal abuse - which were not properly logged or addressed through standard procedures. Senior management acknowledged these claims were credible and took disciplinary action against staff, but the MHC noted delays in incident processing and a failure to return to standard reporting protocols.

The subsequent inspection confirmed ongoing non-compliance in risk management, prompting continued regulatory oversight and support from the Health Service Executive
