Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon and Hayden Police Chief James Chapman discuss the Dec. 7, 2022, fatal shooting of suspect Steven Anthony Bentley. The man fatally shot by law enforcement officers in Blount County last week pointed a gun at the officers and told them, ‘’Kill me. Kill me dead,’’Bentley, who has multiple prior arrests, and convictions for domestic violence and assault, was awaiting trial on two attempted murder charges out of Jefferson County.

The Blount County deputy and the Hayden police officer were dispatched to a residence at 15 Dogwood Lane to perform a welfare check. The caller told dispatchers a woman was being held against her will and had been assaulted. After several minutes, Moon said, the victim opened the door and stepped outside. The sheriff said she had wounds to her head and face and was bleeding. The victim was Bentley’s aunt, Moon said.

Court records show Bentley had nearly one dozen arrests dating back to 2008, and was convicted of assault in 2016.
