'Everyday taxpayers and working families are regularly funding the lavish retirement packages of political cronies,' Jersey City Councilman James Solomon writes.
Updated: Oct. 25, 2023, 2:18 p.m.Over a decade ago, New Jersey put in place laws to save taxpayer dollars by reining in “boat payments.” Boat payments are payouts for accrued sick and vacation leave that administrators can cash out when they retire, but they’re referred to as “boat payments” because the payments are so massive, one could theoretically use them to pay for a boat.
Despite the caps set, these illegal payments persist today – leaving taxpayers across the state shouldering the burden of excessive payouts to New Jersey machine cronies, even as cities like ours face steepening budget crises and higher taxes.
