The body of a man in his 20s was discovered in a public toilet at Fitzgerald's Park in Cork City, prompting renewed concerns about the safety of people experiencing homelessness in the park.

The body of a young man, believed to be in his 20s, was discovered inside a public toilet (portaloo) at Fitzgerald's Park in Cork City on Friday morning. Gardaí, Ireland's national police service, responded to the scene and cordoned off a small area around the public toilet facilities. The body is thought to have been found by an employee during routine checks before the park opened. Eyewitnesses reported several Garda squad cars attending the scene, leaving shortly before 11 am.

The area has since been reopened to the public. A Garda spokesperson confirmed the discovery: 'Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene where a body of a man was discovered in Fitzgerald's park, Cork city, Friday 17th January 2025. His body will be removed to Cork University Hospital awaiting post-mortem examination.' The discovery has prompted renewed concern about the safety of those experiencing homelessness in the park. Fitzgerald's Park has seen several tragic incidents in recent years, including other deaths of individuals living in encampments within its boundaries. According to CorkBeo, a kit used by intravenous drug users and a pamphlet for the main Cork needle exchange programme were found in the portaloo where the body was discovered. This discovery highlights the ongoing challenges faced by individuals struggling with drug addiction in Cork. Charities working with drug users were informed in December that it would likely be a year or more before a supervised injection facility, similar to one recently opened in Dublin, would be available in Cork. Calls for such a facility in the Republic's second-largest city have been growing since it was first proposed almost a decade ago. Politicians, including Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin and Minister of State Colm Burke, both representing Cork constituencies, have expressed openness to the idea of injection facilities for Cork.
