Bohemians secured a 1-0 victory against Shamrock Rovers in a historic Dublin derby witnessed by a record League of Ireland crowd of 33,208 at the Aviva Stadium. New signing Connor Parsons's pace proved instrumental in setting up the winning goal for Ross Tierney.
In front of a record League of Ireland crowd, Bohemians ’ new signings linked up to claim the honours in a historic Dublin derby. Ross Tierney , who returned to Bohs last summer from Motherwell, applied the finish, but the winning goal was made by Alan Reynolds’ winter arrivals Connor Parsons and Lys Mousset.
In front of 33,208 at the Aviva Stadium, Parsons linked up on halfway with the former Premier League striker and used his pace to deliver the opening blow of 2025 in this bitter rivalry. It was an electrifying moment in a game that started cagily, but with Rovers, the visitors, looking sharper on the back of their European heroics three days earlier. A promising opening yielded a couple of long-range efforts by Graham Burke, but both were struck straight at Bohemians goalkeeper James Talbot. Burke took up his usual position on the right of Rovers’ attack and the Hoops made good use of the three-time capped Ireland international in the early stages. His threat from a touchline-hugging start position was highlighted midway through the first-half when he nudged the ball inside full-back John Mountney and took off towards the end-line. His pull-back was hit first-time by Danny Mandroiu, whose shot cannoned off Rob Cornwall and away to safety.Burke was itching for more service and sometimes looked frustrated when a raised arm and call for a ball to be played behind the Bohs backline went unanswered. While Bohs’ congested final third required Rovers to poke and prod, and generally be more patient in their build-up play, there was far more space at the other end of the pitch. And that played right into the hands of the hosts’ new signing Parsons, whose pace was described in the build-up as “electric” by manager Alan Reynolds. When he linked up with former Sheffield United striker Mousset in the 25th minute, the former Waterford man’s speed sent Bohs on their way to the lead goal. A one-two on half-way with Mousset sent the winger clear of ex-Celtic full-back Adam Matthews. As he raced into the area, he skipped all too easily around Rovers skipper Roberto Lopes and drilled the ball low towards goal. Goalkeeper Ed McGinty managed to divert the shot onto the post, but the rebound fell kindly to Ross Tierney who smashed the ball into the net from three yards. Unfortunately for Matthews, he caught up with the play just in time to collide with McGinty, and that painful clash brought an end to his involvement.A Lopes clearance was intercepted by Dawson Devoy, whose header was controlled on the chest by Dayle Rooney. He turned and drilled the ball low towards the right-hand corner, but was denied by the goalkeeper. Once again Michael Noonan, Rovers’ hero in Molde, displayed a footballing maturity well beyond his 16 years. One thing to note about the Hoops wonderkid is that he rarely wastes a ball. His lay-offs are sharp and precise, and once he offloads he is on the move towards the opposition’s goal. He too showed an eagerness to make runs behind the defence and was always alert to potential opportunities. When Mountney underhit his pass back to goalkeeper Talbot five minutes into the second-half, he reacted with lightning speed to intercept. The angle was against him, however, and in attempting to go around Talbot he was robbed by the returning net-minder’s outstretched boot. Opportunity knocked again for Noonan just shy of the hour, when he was released by Mandroiu. Credit to Devoy, though, for keeping pace with the youngster and pressuring him into a shot that was well wide of the target. Rovers almost had another 16-year-old on the scoresheet in the 73rd minute - but neither substitute Victor Ozhianvuna nor Noonan could convert from close range. Noonan was particularly unlucky, as his effort was blocked on the line by his own teammate, Aaron McEneff. That opportunity fell to him from Liam Smith’s goalline block, as the Bohs full-back denied 16-year-old Ozhianvuna a dream debut. For Rovers boss Stephen Bradley, aside from the defeat there are question marks over the fitness of some players ahead of Thursday’s Europa Conference League second-leg against Molde. Gary O’Neill and Mandroiu also came off with knocks, joining Matthews, who looked to be in a lot of pain after his collision with McGinty.
