Foundation is preparing to open its estimated 19.3-acre campus in Chicago's historic Jackson Park, honouring art, music and literature. The $850m center will also be home to an NBA-regulation basketball court, a recording studio, Chicago Public Library and a sledding hill in celebration of the former US President, Barack Obama, his legacy, and his wife Michelle.
The grand opening ceremony on June 18 kicks off at 11am, with a hefty line-up of 'generational' musicians, including U2 legend,-born songwriter and activist will unite with Obama at the public event following years of joint collaborative work on humanitarian and anti-poverty initiatives. During Obama's first inauguration in 2009, U2 performed for the celebration.
Others set to take to the stage include Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Eddie Vedder, Common, Jennifer Hudson, Marc Anrthony, Marsai Martin, The Roots and Tems. Confirming the line-up in a post on Instagram this week, the Obama Foundation wrote: "We are bringing together some of today’s most prominent voices and global icons for the Obama Presidential Center Grand Opening Ceremony. It’s a front-row seat to history, no matter where you are.
Tune in to feel the thrill of legendary performances by global icons and powerful remarks from today’s most prominent voices and leaders.
". Celebrating the new center, the charity described the project as the "newest cultural landmark" in the Hyde Park neighbourhood, situated on Chicago's south side.
"The Center will serve as a vibrant community hub, including a museum, gardens, event space, athletic facilities, a branch of the Chicago Public Library, and more," it added. After the ceremony on Thursday, the doors will officially open to the public as of Friday . Over the weekend, there will be an open-house style of performances, family activities, food, art and storytelling.
