Some adults were also reduced to tears and regular visitors said they wouldn't return due to the method used to kill squirrels at the popular attraction, internal records show
Three squirrel-killing machines were decommissioned at the National Botanic Gardens after children were reported crying at the sight of maimed animals in open areas of the popular heritage site.
The OPW said the decision to kill grey squirrels at the gardens had been made necessary because visitors were feeding the animals, and they had become aggressive. “It is very upsetting for visitors to see this and, in fact, some kids were in tears when they saw this, not to mention some adults.” An official from the National Botanic Gardens replied to the first complainant and apologised for the distress caused by what they had witnessed.“We were told that these were humane traps and it is upsetting to hear otherwise,” he added.
